MotorSports Info

The first round of titles were awarded Wednesday after the opening two days of competition at the 38th Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships at the Lincoln Airpark. In all, 25 of the 33 classes were taken by drivers holding the overnight lead, while eight others saw a change at the top for the National Championship. Leading the list of drivers holding serve from Tuesday’s runs were a pair of drivers taking their fourth-consecutive National Championships. Mark Madarash, of Red Oak, Texas, drove his No. 191 Pontiac Trans Am to a 1.384-second victory over Samuel Krauss’ Doug’s Auto/NEPTune/TRE Eagle Talon in E Street Prepared. Jeff Kiesel equaled the feat in E Modified, taking his Goodyear Tire KFR Turbo Sprite to a dominating fourth-straight title. Kiesel’s wife, two-time Champion Shawn Marie Kiesel, was one of the eight drivers to pass the opening day leader to earn a title. Trailing defending and 13-time Champion Patty Tunnell’s BarekAub.com/Hoosier/H&R BMW M3 by 0.137-second after day one, Kiesel took the lead after her second run in the Goodyear KFR Turbo Sprite and was then helped by Tunnell’s trouble on her second run, when the supercharged motor expired. The Kiesel family almost had three Nationals wins, as 10-year old son Zak finished second in the supplemental (Non-Championship) Formula Junior B driving a kart he only first ran this week.

Larry Dixon and Ashley Force Hood returned to the winner's circle and were joined by first-time winners Greg Stanfield and LE Tonglet as the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil roared to its traditional Labor Day conclusion at O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis.
Tonglet joined a short list of rookies to win the U.S. Nationals -- a hall of fame group that includes Dixon, Gary Beck, and Bob Glidden—while the win for Top Fuel superstar Dixon was his fourth at the event and his first since 2005 and Force Hood scored a repeat victory in Funny Car. For Dixon, the win meant an increase in the points lead in the Countdown to the Championship playoffs that began at this event and will continue for the next five events culminating with the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals later this year in California. The other winners used the event as a chance to gain ground on the incoming leaders and stake their claims for a title.

T.J. Coughlin wins Indy for JEGS.com

MotorSports Info

Being a member of the Coughlin family and success at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals seems to go hand-in-hand. Third-generation drag racer Troy Coughlin Jr. is just the latest example. On Monday, T.J., as his friends and family know him, joined his famous father, uncles, and grandfather as a U.S. Nationals winner when the 20-year-old took the Super Comp title in Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series action at O'Reilly Raceway Park. "You've got to focus from the minute you get here on Tuesday until the minute you leave on Monday," Coughlin said. "Even now, I've already won the race, but I'm still thinking about the run I had. That's the mindset it takes." Coughlin beat 72 qualified drivers across eight rounds of competition to bring home his second career national event Wally.

Greg Stanfield win U.S. Nationals title

INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 6) -- After 40 years in drag racing, Jay Payne can now officially say he's has done it all after a convincing victory Monday at the sport's biggest event -- the 56th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil. In earning two world championships, 11 divisional crowns, 39 national event victories, and 69 additional trophies in a variety of classes, Payne had never struck paydirt at O'Reilly Raceway Park until now. In a flash of exhaust and tire smoke, the affable Southern Californian executed a pass of 5.648 seconds at 256.36 mph to dismiss final-round opponent Tony Bartone and ink his name in the record books of "the Big Go." "We're worn out right now, but feeling awfully good," Payne said. "You know, we won this race before in Pro Mod when it was an exhibition class and I'd been runner up in both Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car here, but this is the first Wally from Indy so it's darn special."

Kenny Koretsky’s long wait for a NHRA Pro Stock victory officially ended Monday afternoon in the most unexpected place: the 56th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals winner’s circle. Winless for more than 25 years, the popular team owner and former driver was jumping up and down and smiling broadly when Greg Stanfield drove to an upset decision over Mike Edwards, the reigning series champion, in the title round at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis. “To win my first race here is awesome,” said Koretsky, of Richboro, Pa., as he fielded congratulatory phone calls from his many friends and family. “It’s funny because I had the feeling we would win all day. I just knew it, and then Greg got the job done.”

Thompson in positive mood after Okayama races

MotorSports Info

Irish racing driver Gary Thompson left Okayama in a positive mood last weekend after rounds 11 and 12 of the Japanese F3 Championship.
With his Achievement by KCMG Racing team having spent the four-week break prior to the event making numerous changes to his Cebu Pacific Air-backed Dallara chassis, the 18-year-old Dubliner produced his best qualifying performance of the season and was able to mix it with the leading factory-supported drivers in the races.
Unfortunately, his weekend wasn’t all plain sailing as, after a strong fourth-place finish in round 11, Thompson suffered suspension damage early in round 12 and came home eighth, despite fighting hard for a top five finish while dealing with the problem.
After qualifying in fourth and fifth in the hotly-contested National Class, the Aviation Display-supported Thompson made a solid start to Race 1 and battled for a podium throughout the opening half of the 18-lap race.
Having found no way past Kazuki Miura ahead, Thompson began to suffer heavy rear tyre wear, a problem that had first emerged in Friday’s free practice sessions, but put in a mature drive to take a comfortable fourth place at the chequered flag.
Hoping for a similar display in race 2, the young Irishman again made a strong start and was challenging for fourth once more on the opening lap when he was touched by the car ahead as he tried a move around the outside.
Having initially dropped back to seventh, Thompson was back up a place with one of the best passing moves of the weekend, but it soon became apparent that he’d suffered suspension damage during the earlier contact.
Despite doing his utmost to hold off the train of cars behind as the problem intensified, he eventually slipped to eighth at the finish.

Ave Wins Sixth SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Series Pole of 2010 Season at Brainerd

MotorSports Info

SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Series points leader Tony Ave, of Maiden, N.C., earned his sixth pole position of the season in qualifying for Sunday’s eighth round of the 10-race 2010 championship at Brainerd International Raceway. Driving the No. 4 Lamers Racing/McMahon Group/Optech/PME Chevrolet Corvette, Ave lapped BIR’s 2.5-mile circuit in 1:27.432 (102.937 mph) to take the top spot on the starting grid. It was the 12th time in Ave’s Trans-Am career that he was the fastest qualifier, moving him into a tie for 10th on the series’ all-time fast qualifiers list with Peter Gregg and Parnelli Jones. Ave will be looking for his fifth Trans-Am victory on Sunday. “The last couple of races, we’ve just been practicing on old tires trying to work on our late-race setup,” Ave said. “It’s been a little bit of a surprise how fast we’ll be able to go in qualifying, but we picked up a bunch and it was good. Tomy (Drissi) was really close, though, closer than the times look. His first lap was the same as my first lap. I think it’s going to be a good race.” Ave will be joined on the front row in Sunday’s race by 2009 Trans-Am champion Tomy Drissi, of Hollywood, Calif. After running the quickest time in practice earlier in the day, Drissi posted a best lap at 1:28.198 (102.043 mph) to take second in qualifying. He was looking for his second pole of the season and believes his chances of success were hampered by traffic in the early stages of qualifying. He was one of several who also pointed out that conserving tires will be critical in Sunday’s 36-lap race at Brainerd.

Mann Makes KYS History With 100-Mile FIL Victory

MotorSports Info

SPARTA, KY. - Sam Schmidt Motorsports driver Pippa Mann became the first female racer to earn a Kentucky Speedway victory by leading all 67 laps of this afternoon’s Firestone Indy Lights “Drive Smart. Buckle- Up Kentucky 100.” The 27-year-old from Ipswich, England, who became the third female competitor to take a Kentucky Speedway open-wheel race pole award yesterday, set sail when the green flag waved and built a 3.5563 seconds lead over Team Moore Racing driver James Hinchcliffe by Lap 30. Mann was only threatened by a Lap 3 caution brought out by a three-car incident involving Stefan Wilson, Daniel Herrington and Philip Major, but restarted strong, thundered through the remainder of the 100 racing miles and became the fourth FIL driver to earn a Kentucky Speedway victory from the pole position when her No. 11 machine soared across the finish line an FIL track-record 6.8372 seconds ahead of Hinchcliffe in the No. 2 Team Moore Racing car. I joked yesterday that I was going to run away and hide today, but I didn’t really think it would happen. I got my legs underneath me, started pedaling and no one could catch me. Last week at Chicagoland, it was fast racing, but this is a handling track. You have to set the car up to run the fastest line and we focused on that. If we got into deep traffic today, I don’t think we could’ve run as well, but we took a little bit of a gamble on the set up and it paid off. Hinch beat me last week and this week the tables were turned,” Mann said. She seizes her first career Firestone Indy Lights victory and her second consecutive top-two http://www.indycar.com/finish this season.

"The fight for the No. 1 spot is always a challenge, especially here at the U.S. Nationals," Coughlin said. "It feels fantastic to bring it back to the JEGS pit, even if it's just for one night. Tomorrow's going to be another battle because the conditions are supposed to be similar to what we saw today. Pro Stock cars love it when it's cool and dry like this."

Magic Mileage Number Brings Castroneves a Kentucky Indy 300 Victory

MotorSports Info

SPARTA, KY. - A magic fuel number contrived by veteran Team Penske Race Strategist Tim Cindric helped Helio Castroneves rebound from an early-race pit stop error and emerge with a 13.1597 second “Kentucky Indy 300” victory over race pole award winner Ed Carpenter tonight. Castroneves feathered the throttle in his No. 3 Team Penske machine through the final 53 of 200 race laps and stayed on track as the five drivers in front of him cycled to the pits to refresh their car’s fuel cells from Laps 192-197 to recover from a green-flag race run that started on Lap 95. The nine-year veteran, who was denied a 2008 Kentucky victory when his car’s fuel cell ran dry in the frontstretch coming to the checkered flag and was passed by eventual winner Scott Dixon, seized the lead with three laps remaining and jetted away to his second victory of the season and his first in the Bluegrass State. He leads all IndyCar Series drivers in Kentucky Speedway top-five finishes with seven and top-10 finishes with eight through nine career starts. “Incredible job from Team Penske. When we started the race, the car wasn’t the fastest, but it wasn’t the slowest. It had pretty good balance. We were right there, it was very tough. “We came to the pits for the first stop and had a miscommunication. The crew chief thought the right rear (tire) wasn’t on, so I had one guy telling me go, go, go and the guy on top of me telling me to stay. We ended up losing about 10 positions.
